Actos. Oral agent
that reduces insulin
resistance.
Amaryl. Oral agent
that increases insulin production in the pancreas. The newest
in the class of pills called Sulfonylureas.
Amputation.
Surgical removal of a limb of the body. Most commonly, in
diabetes, of lower extremities, i.e. toe, foot, below the knee,
above the knee.
Apidra. Trade name for Glulisine. New rapid acting insulin.
Onset, peak and duration of actions is very similar to Novolog and
Humalog insulins.
Atherosclerosis:
A process of progressive thickening and hardening of the
walls of medium-sized and large arteries as a result of fat deposits
on their inner lining.
Risk factors for atherosclerosis include high levels of "bad" cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, diabetes and a genetic family history of atherosclerotic
disease.
Atherosclerosis is responsible for much coronary artery disease (angina and heart attacks) and many
strokes.

Blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart...the blood
usually is well-oxygenated.
